The winter wind was blowin’ hard-
And snow was comin’ down.
The hosses were a eating
The hay he’d scattered round.

He went back in the lineshack-
Tucked a sack beneath the door-
To block the cold wind blowin-
Across the hard dirt floor.

Standin’ in the corner
A scrubby cedar tree-
Bedecked with holly berries,
It wasn’t much to see.

It brought to mind a childhood
Of gifts and lights and song
And made him stop and wonder
Why he was here alone?

The first time in a long time
He’d gone to cut a tree-
He grumbled, “this is foolish-
There’s no one here but me”.

But some how he feels better
Because it’s Christmas time
Then memories from long ago
Filter through his mind.

He recalls the church house meetings
The scriptures read and such
But as a youg hell-raiser
He hadn’t listened much.

“Seems to me that Christmas time
Ain’t of Santa Claus-
Somethin’ major happened-
But what? I’m at a loss???

He takes out one old Christmas card
He got in eighty-two-
“Peace on Earth, goodwill to men”
It all came pouring through,,,

He thought of long and wasted years
Of women he had known
Of fighting stock and meaner men
And times when he’d got thrown.

At last he bowed his shaggy head
And knelt upon the floor-
I ain’t much, but what I am
I’m givin’ to you Lord!

So Christmas came to Rocky Creek
Up on the Great Divide-
A cowboy got delivered
From his ego and his pride.

Remembered that a Savior
Came to this earth and died-
Yes, Christmas came to Rocky Creek
Up on the Great Divide

What a lovely story, Gunslinger. No greater joy on earth or in heaven than when a soul turns to the Lord. Well done, again!

Gunslinger- I have come to love your stuff..
You take the most simple things and create the most beautiful pictures with your words..
Your poetry reminds me of nature that God created with His majestic words as He painted the creation into existance..I am a farm boy from the hills of N.W. Arkansas and I can really merge with your flow of thoughts. The simple things in life are the most beautiful I think..such as the muscle lines on the flanks of a lean stallion, etc.
I know you have been through Hell & back by the depth & wisdom in your thoughts..They are as gentle as the reflections of moonlight upon gentle waters & a few of your words speak a million thoughts...the Lord went there & back also Gunslinger.. He too was endued with power from on High with His words..may God bless you abundantly with your gift..you sure bless me..I am in N. Dallas right now. Might e-mail you sometime.
My only brother lives in Houston also. Thanks again for sharing your experiences with us--we Love you..merry christmas

And I, too enjoy the tales you tell.
This was captivating.

I liked this poem very much.  A nice Christmas story.  I'm going to send a copy of this to my son.  He's in the army in Germany.    James
