Just An Ordinary Man

Just an ordinary man was he,
who knelt that night on bended knee.
“No room at the inn,” the keeper did say;
so Jesus, his son, was born in the hay
of an old manger bed, in a stable they found,
while cattle and donkeys stood all around.
Joseph touched the cheek of his infant child
and smiled at his wife, so meek and so mild.
While shepherds in a field watched the angles sing;
he wondered how he would raise a king.
What made God choose him from all the rest?
What special skills did he possess?
He was just a carpenter, a man of the trade.
He wasn’t of royalty. He wasn’t well paid.
What could he offer God’s son become man?
Just the love of a father and the trade of his hand.
So why was he chosen? Could he do the task?
These questions and more, to God , Joseph did ask.
Then he knelt near the manger, to pray for a while,
looked at his son, and suddenly smiled.
He’d make mistakes, but he’d do his best.
For the challenge God gave him, he felt truly blessed.
Just an ordinary man was he,
who knelt there that night on bended knee.

Very nicely portrayed, Ruth. Merry Christmas

Then God replied to the man on his knees,
"Only an ordinary man? Oh but not to me.
Your faith is resounding,
Your life you live right.
You give from your heart
And your hands and your might."

"This child must grow up
As any child must
By the sweat of the brow
And a life built on trust."

"To save this here world
From the sins built on lust
He must see them first hand
With his face in the dust."

The man on his knees
Saw what he must do.
Just love this small child,
Do the best he could do.

He smiled at the infant,
He took his wife's hand.
He would show him his love,
This Savior, yet man.

Ruth:

This is beautifully portrayed.  A wonderful example of God's providence also.

This is a Wonderful piece Ruth...so very uplifting and heartwarming...
When Joseph "smiled", so did I....

A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire!

Hoot,
You toot a mean flute
And I must confess,
I agree with the rest.

I loved this.  It made me cry with the image in my mind of Joseph on bended knee.  No ordinary man was he.  I don't think there is any ordinary man or woman.

Simple is usually more beautiful. Ordinary often has more depth.
Very nice, Ruth

Beautifully told, Ruth.

Nail to the mast her holy flag,
Set every threadbare sail-
And give her to the god of storms,
The lightning and the gale!
