Mom, What Will I Be?
~Marge Tindal~ 1999

When I was just a kid
I looked at Mom and said,
"What am I going to be,
long before I'm dead?"

She smiled that knowing smile,
and touseled my golden hair.
She held me close in her hug
and said, "Do not despair."

"My child, you will become
just who you want to be."
And feeling her reassurance,
was good enough for me.

Through all the years of my dawning,
I knew just what she meant.
For at every crossroad that I stood,
I chose just where I went.

It wasn't until I reached
past the making of the man;
that I fully understood
just where I had made my plan.

In my mother's hug,
locked safely in her embrace,
I learned that I, alone, had the answer
to the things I would have to face.

And proudly I made my mark,
and I think it goes unsaid
I chose who I would be
long before I was dead.

Remember me with kindness.
I surely hope that you can.
Remember that I chose
to be just who I am.

Cry not at my leaving.
Only be glad I was me.
I chose where I was going.
That's how it should be.

I chose to be myself
I think Mother would agree,
that I chose wisely
in choosing to be me.

Denise and Balladeer ... thanks for reading my posts and for letting me know you like them. I feel like I've found a place to share and to gain from the works of others.

I too asked my mother,
"What ya think I will be?"
She replied "Oh brother!,
Beats the hell outta me?"

They offer many classes,
In the reformatory schools,
"How to shoot craps like the experts"
And the basics of lock-picking tools."

"Or you may be a professional fighter,
Yanno a "gigolo" wouldn't be bad,
But my intuition tells me,
You'll grow up to be a Toerag!"

"One thing I am sure of,
And I'm sure you also know it,
You'll never be a preacher,
And definitely not a poet!"

(Mom's are so wise..don't ya think?)

Very nice poem....like always Marge..

Great poem(s), Marge (and Toe)!

But Toe...I've no doubt your mother would be very proud of you, but she was wrong if she thought you weren't a poet! *G*

Marge

I truly liked your way of saying what you said. You brought out self-determination so well. I think your Mom would love to read this poem. I think she would be proud of you, and proud of herself for bringing into this world somebody like you. I hope you still have the opportunity to let her know what a terrific job she did.

As for Toerag... well, if you don't have any of his children, I think you will be OK. lol

Hands on hips..(LJA)I'm first in line for that attention, when you give to me, I'll think about letting you stand in as a "proxy" for Toe..LOL

Very sentimental words,,I'm sure your mom is proud of you to this day.

Marge

I think Suthern sums it quite well - people have been standing in long lines waiting for that Toerag rascal to be ready, but he just doesn't measure up - lol. You may keep waiting as one of his expectant wannabes, or you can chase after Balladeer. Either option is truly sad. I know... I know... The world truly lost when lil Lorelei snatched me up. But I'm sure there is somebody out there who comes close to me - it just isn't that nefarious Toerag! lol

Excuse me, Mr. Long John ...
I don't 'wannabe' speaking in haste.
But did you just insinutate
that I'd be the one to 'chase'?

Balladeer and Toe,
defend my honor, please !
Tell him that I wasn't
a little p---k tease !

I'm counting on you guys
to be real gentlemen ...
Now look what a mess
I've gotten in !
--------------------------------------------
Thanks Suthern, Loreli, Toe and Hoot.
You all are just too kind. (and fun too)
~M~
