Has Anybody Seen My Son? My God! What could have happened! My God! Where can they be! Didn't I tell them just this morning not to go out to sea? I felt the wind was blowing and I heard the ocean roar And I told them not to leave as they were walking out the door Has any body seen my son! Where can my husband be! I told them on a night like this they should't go out to sea All the other fishermen tell of their dreadful fright But nobody even saw my men out there in the treacherous night I said where is the morning star, Just hear the ocean churn! Whoever goes out on a raft tonight will surely not return I felt the wind and heard the waves, crashing hard against the shore I begged them not to leave as they were walking out the door! How bountiful must have been the fish, how violent was the wave That snatched my men so cruelly to avenge the fish it gave Please let me feel the hunger pains for many many days! But let my men survive the sea and come back home today They should have been here hours ago! My God! Where can they be! Didn't I tell them just this morning not to go out to sea I call out now to Yemanja as I stand here on the shore Why didn't you bless my men as they were walking out the door! Oh, goddess of the oceans! Why did you let them go! The men who filled my life with the only love I know If you have them with you, Yemanja, may they forever be In peace and glory there with you at the bottom of the sea Elizabeth Santos |

Thank you both . Glad you enjoyed this poem. It's one of several that I've written about Brazilian fishermen, and unfortunately it is true to life all too often Liz |
