THE CANDY DRAWER

Well, we were just kids trying to get away
With something we knew we shouldn't do.
Going over to Grandma's, sneaking off to play-
In the back room where we weren't supposed to.

Making sure no one saw, behind us closing the door,
With my sister Sherry and my brother Andy.
Over to the dresser, sliding open the drawer,
Our eyes lit up as we saw all that candy.

Oh, we all got our share, there was plenty to spare.
Still, one by one, we'd all sneak back for more.
But we never thought about the candy ever running out-
From Grandma's "personal" candy drawer.

Somehow Time sped up and the visits slowed down.
Somewhere, the sweetness slipped from our thought
Soon we were all married, living lives of our own,
And the drawer was all but forgot.

The day snuck up on us all, you were no longer here.
Only the memories of what we shared before.
Why did it take your passing to see it so clear?
It wasn't for you, but for us, you filled that drawer.

Cause we all got our share with plenty to spare.
And when we came back, there always was more.
But we never thought about the candy ever running out-
From your "personal" candy drawer.

Oh, I cant help believe you were watching us then-
As I'm sure you are now are from heaven above.
Now, the drawer is empty, but I'll always remember when
You filled it one piece at a time with your love.

Cause we were just kids getting away
With something we were supposed to.
Sneaking off to the backroom to play,
Grandma, you always knew.
Is it too late, Grandma, to say thank you?

This is an older piece and a little rough on the edges, but it's never been posted on these forums. Hope you'll still find it enjoyable. I just get sentimental this time of year.

Michael, you can get just as sentimental as you want. Really liked this alot. My granny had a candy drawer too and my mom has carried on the tradition and as soon as my grandkids are a little older I will take up the torch. What a great memory you invoked here. Thanx

Michael, I found no rough edges only a smooth compassinate heart portraying happy memories that will always be cherished in your heart and the heart of your grandmother as she watches over you for all your years. This to me was one of your best!

Michael,
My parents always have had a candy drawer and when ever my children were younger, that was the first place they always went. It has carried on to the younger grand children and even the great grand children now. Thanks for the smile and the warm reminder.

This is a special poem Michael, about a special love that so many of us feel in some form or another--and expressed so well, straight from the heart.

What a special memory,
tucked away within your mind.
Grandma's must be the sweetest
candy keepers in the world ..
I had the very same kind.

Michael, thank you for making
my heart take a trip back to
a time I never wanted to forget.
I never eat a Candy Kiss
without thinking of my Grandma.
Then I hear Grandpa singing
~Candy kisses, wrapped in paper,
mean more to you ... than mine do dear.~
And Grandma would just give him that
'LOOK' and smile.

Ah wow, this was a really nice poem Michael....I'm glad you're "digging up" happy thoughts here around the holidays....Very glad you dusted this one off to share with those of us who didn't know this side of you. It is a precious piece - I too, have very fond memories of my great-grandma's house, I used to stay there quite a bit when I was very young. We had 10 wonderful years together before she passed away. All memories of her, I hold dear to my heart. Thank you for reminding me of her tonight.....and all the little things.

And why not get sentimental?!
This is great - not everything we write has to be 'perfect'. (Not that I actually see anything wrong with this by any means) My Nan and Pop had lots of little jars of candy all over their place that I used to sneak into - I wonder if they noticed the decrease!

I have to agree with everyone on this. It was very touching! Never to late to say thank you. A wonderful memory and I'm glad you shared it with us.

My grandpa used to have a money jar. He used to get such a kick out of watching us. He'd tell us to reach in there and grab as much change as we could. Whatever we got out we could keep. So of course you'd grab a handful, but the neck was sort of slim, so you ended up with only a few coins.
I had forgot all about that until now. Thank you for that memory!
