Bars And Bears by ©Richard Budig 1999 We’ve all taunted the beast Poked at it through the bars And returned its smoky glare When it wheeled to face us And sensing victory over caged fury Tossed in the last of our ice cream And watched hunger replace instinct And then home with mommy Crunching jelly beans and lifesavers And then off to bed in jammies with feet Where we drift low and lower still Until we almost slip away Until suddenly from our pillow Comes a low and throated growl And now it is we who wheel To face the uncaged fang and fury That roots just outside our windows That lingers beneath our beds That slobbers through our closets Not to mention the inside of our heads |
