Now, you folks know I'm always up for "requests"...

Methinks - Some of you take me more literally than others...

I received this email concerning this month's workshop...
quote:

Hey Nan! Sorry I've been skipping class in the poetryworkshop. February's coming up and I wonder if you guys have ever done Odes? By which I mean Horatian and Pindaric... I realize this style of poem might be a bit much to bite off, so my second suggestion is Ghazal, which I've been meaning to try.

I'll try to be more active. Even if you don't pick my ideas.

Now, I'm perfectly happy to do this - We'll be needing a translation from the esteemed poet, however.

Stand up and be counted...

Just to clarify, I've posted the details on the Ode in a thread in the workshop.

That thread is here.

Odes...

quote:
A poem of high seriousness with irregular stanzaic forms.
The regular Pindaric or Greek ode imitates the passionate manner of Pindar (ca. 552-442 B.C.) and consists of a strophe, an antistrophe, and an epode.
In English the Pindaric odes are termed irregular, Cowleyan, or just English. In 1706 William Congreve wrote that "The Character of these late Pindariques, is a Bundle of rambling incoherent Thoughts, express'd in a like parcel of irregular Stanza's." Examples include Thomas Gray's "The Progress of Poesy" and "The Bard," and William Wordsworth's "Ode: Intimations of Immortality."
Horatian odes, after the Latin poet Horace (65-8 B.C.), were written in quatrains in a more philosophical, civil manner. Examples include Andrew Marvell's "Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland" and William Collins' "Ode to Evening."
The Sapphic ode consists of quatrains, three 11-syllable lines, and a final 5-syllable line, unrhyming but with a strict metre. For example, Swinburne's "Sapphics" and Ezra Pound's "Apparuit."

I've got a bit of research to do!

Nan,
Passing the buck as usual I see. Oh well, you know what they say about that, besides, I'm sure that as supreme overseer of such a mischievous lot you would not let anything go awry. Who knows, maybe in some far, far distant future, I'll volunteer to  host the
"shop" for a month. Whadaya think?

Teacher Nan, I don't know what either one of these are. So, I am in big trouble.

Yikes!!  This little verbal trinket from Wordsworth is 208 lines long!

"Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood "
Double Yikes!!

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light

Well, bugger. Been dealing with pain meds which muddle, and procedures for fixing my stupid wrist, so my mind has been rather muffled as of late. I do have an ode, but it is rather old, and wouldn't meet the guidelines for a new piece.

For those interested, check the archives for 'Ode to a Sneeze'.
