Her Face

I walked one evening in my own country
streets full of stars
trees throwing shadows into the sky
and I came to a place where men lay sleeping
on cold sidewalks covered with roses, roses
thrown by pale hands from windows high above,
windows no one ever sees through.

Then, crossing the footbridge, I began to run
as it dropped, board by board, behind me
into the river. It was then her face appeared - -
the face of a woman half my age - - who had wept
and died perhaps – for things I’ve never lived - -
and I thought, will it always be this way,
others brave, me waiting for a sign?

Hi Margaret!

First of all, I want to welcome you to the Poetry Workshop.  The Passions in Poetry Forums are the happiest place to hang out in cyperspace and I am delighted to see your poem here.

I especially like the lines:
"Then, crossing the footbridge, I began to run
as it dropped, board by board, behind me
into the river."
Don't know when I have ever read such an apt description of a panic situation.
And yet there are so many poetic phrases in this poem that evoke strong feeling.
Great write with a truly elegant style.

Margaret,
While I might not be as apt as Bridget in commenting on others' poetry ( which is why I seldom do), here again, I see promise in the way you describe things. Seeing that part which most would overlook. The nuance, the shadings, all that which makes this an art-form. Best of luck and welcome to Passions.

This is a wonderfully introspective piece, Margaret.  You've penned a lovely verse, incorporating just the right amount of imagery to bring your poem to life... I enjoyed it very much, and surely hope to see more from you in the future...
