If only I could write a proper sonnet, With meter flowing smooth and unforced rhyme, To stake my poet's reputation on it Would be a joy to treasure anytime. Or even write some verse of lighter note, A limerick or two to bring a smile To those who read the poem that I wrote... For sure I have been trying quite a while. To maximize the benefit of rays And best enjoy the feel of warming light That fills the air on brightest summer days, Instead of working now I think I might Forget the effort and, with drinks in hand, Go join my nekkid buddies in the sand. |

KEWL Pete! But uhh... I hardly dare say... I keep stumbling over one line:"To those who read the poem that I wrote..." For the Dutch that are only nine syllables. See what happens when you play nekkid with your buddies in the sand! |

LOL I stumbled over the same line Munda did, but all the same, I like it and as I've finished my homework I'll join you in the sandbox. I have to push Marge in the merry-go-round anyway. Titia Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

Ah, my dear Dutch friends, I think I know what is throwing you off here. It must be the word poem. If you will check www.webster.com and search for poem under dictionary, they give 2 pronunciations for the word. The first is clearly two syllables while the second is really only one. I assume this is like all dictionary references wherein the first listed is the preferred or most common. In any case, having spent most of my life in Oklahoma and near the southern part of the USA, I can't even conceive poem as one syllable. Please try to bear with me on this I can't claim it is right but I just can't read it any other way. Pete Never express yourself more clearly than you can think - Niels Bohr Dang, I can't type either [This message has been edited by Not A Poet (07-24-2003 12:31 AM).] |

Geesh, thanks Pete! Would you believe I have pronounced poem as a 1 syllable word for over 20 years? Hmm, I wonder why nobody ever told me, but I'm glad you did. I love to learn something new, so if you ever come across something weird I wrote, please feel free to correct me. Thanks again Pete and umm... I suppose your sonnet has perfect iambic pentameter uh? |
