~In September~

In September
at the bending of the year
blustery breezes nip at summer swelter
and color dapples the leaves
of winded branches

vegetables ripen for harvest
and pumpkins smile their spooky grins
onto our doorsteps

fireplaces cozy our hearts
with visions of little witches on broomsticks
soon to be ringing doorbells of trick or treat
excusing us
for all of the leftover candy we eat

birds flock southward
darkening the skies
as the wind breathes
the tart scent of ripening apples

musings of colored leaves burn bright
in anticipation
as another year
swerves gracefully
toward it's end
~

I'm reluctant to speak in cliches but you have painted a beautifully vivid picture here. Thanks for sharing.

You are so right!! Autumn is a wonderful time of year and you too have painted a beautiful "portrait" with your lovely words describing it. BTW--I kinda like free verse too!! Keep writing!

Hi Lyra, This seems so different for you and I had to read it twice. It's really, really good and paints a picture of what is so special about September.

'...with visions of little witches on broomsticks...'  such a great line! And so reminds me of myself.  ;-)

Again, you and David have a really special time in FL and my prayers for a safe trip.

Now go pack....Hugs, Marti

Every now and then take a good look at something not made
with hands -- a mountain, a star, the power of the ocean.
There will come to you wisdom,

Thanks so much Pete... I think its okay to speak in cliches...
Cliches become cliches because they sound so good that everyone starts saying them... and then suddenly no one wants to say them anymore because everyone else says them... aren't human beings weird?
Thanks so much for liking my poem...

Thanks so much, Tammy...  I actually just started writing free verse recently... probably 3 or 4 months ago.
I had always written in rhyme, but I find that I can fit so much more imagery into a free verse poem, because I don't have to worry about the words rhyming.
You keep writing too!

Thanks so much, Marti...  Did you really think this was so different for me?  I wonder why...
I've been writing free verse on and off now for about 4 months...
Now... How about I will pack tomorrow!

September is the very best time of the year here on Cape Cod - The weather is perfect - The air is crisp - The ocean is lovely.. I wish I could keep this month all year - especially the way you've painted it here, dear Lyra - Time to gather nuts for the winter now...

Thanks Nan...
I guess I'm going to have to gather some of them in Florida, but thats okay... they probably have some exotic ones which fall off the palm trees.  I'll save those for a gourmet treat of remembrance...

Lyra--

You are gifted in all the poetry forms and do free verse so well.  It's such a pleasure to read your poems.  Hope that you are enjoying the trip to Florida.

"As the wind breathes the tart scent of riping apples"  Yes, I can smell this. How lovely the scent, how lovely the write.

Thank you. Now all I want is a  hot apple pie with vanilla ice cream. It's l:18 am and that is what I will probably dream about!
