Two questions.....what makes a good prose and how do you determine the line breaks, the paragraphs and etc to make it read smoothly and the same with free verse. Are there even rules for free verse. I know there are in prose though I don't know them all. Thanks......will learn whatever you toss at us....or at least attempt it. ![]() |

Mark: In my opinion, there are really no "rules" for writing free-verse poetry, only conventions. I think the line break is actually one of the most distinguishing characteristics between poetry and prose. Portions of Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" would be an example of poetry that seems to straddle the "line" convention has placed between poetry and prose. In most free-verse, I believe the line break is used as a tool to assist the poet in building tension in the poem ... a line break may indicate a pause, a breath, or a means for a poet to either ease or jar the flow of the poem. Prosaic lines enjamb (i.e., the lines run on from margin to margin). Now, even though there are technically no "rules" to writing free-verse, this does not mean that a free-verse poem cannot be a poorly written poem. jim |

Jim, Thank you for the comments. I have never felt comfortable in free verse as I don't really know if my line breaks add or take away from the poem and I am not sure I would be able to tell the difference on my own. I have no problem enjoying a "good" free verse written by someone else but when it comes to mine.......I CRINGE. Doesn't feel natural to me without rhyme and I am trying to get past that stage. Also, I wrote "1" prose piece and posted it and after reading the replies, I didn't know if I had written a prose or not. It was labled as poetic prose by some of those who read it and they did leave wonderful comments on it for me but the question still remains.....how the heck do you write a successful prose? Thanks again Jim.....I truely appreciate your comments and they do make sense to me. [This message has been edited by Mark Bohannan (08-03-2002 07:01 PM).] |

Nan since you have the cream of the crop here in your class I would really like to join in and learn from all of you if you have room for a new student. I'm just an old country boy that likes to write.I'm a slow learner but I have plenty of dedication. I posted my attempt at a Paradelle & Sestina on open poetry 21 cause I didn't have a key to post it here. Living to learn... Paul |

Rules for free verse? I probably shouldn't ask...but why? Doesn't that defeat the purpose? Sorry, I'll be sneaking back to the playground now. Marge, you got Percocet? Wanna be my new best friend? I'm in pain, really I am!! lol |

Mark: Getting back to your question regarding writing good prose ... the answer, of course, is reading good prose voraciously and practicing hard. Nan: I'm in for the free-verse lesson. Duncan: I like one of Drury's examples: The pitcher threw the base ball to home plate Arguably, this could be three lines from a poem written in free-verse. The line breaks are clumsy, and the disruption to the syntax caused by them is difficult to justify. Can it be done this way? Sure. Is it difficult to do it this way and write a quality poem? I think so. Just an opinion. Looking forward to the assignment. Jim |

Free At Last Here’s my “Get Out of Jail Free” Card, My Chance To flaunt conventions, Use my own style, Say what I think An all expenses paid trip Into my mind, And anywhere it takes me, Except the therapist. I can get personal Or be outrageous And tell some really honest lies. Be somebody else Be me. I can go anywhere Do anything Be anything I please. I don’t have to count feet, Sound meter, (No damn dumb da-DUM), Or rhyme. (Now maybe I can shake this headache.) I can wear my comfy words With no constraints. Shed the formal attire. Pen the most profound profanities, The most profane profundities Or any other ditties on my mind. I’m In! ![]() Shenachie |

free verse has rules, no matter what anyone says... you just get to make them up yourself. ![]() nan - you should get l'il k in here. ![]() ps - is it "a" prose, or just prose. "a" prose doesn't sound quite right to me. ![]() |
