My Velvet Rose I remember you, a rosebud fair With cheeks of pink and curly hair And skin of silken petal’s touch Perfumed of rose I loved so much A little flower in Easter dress In thralls of childhood happiness With puckered lips and eyes aflirt And puffy crimson velvet skirt You blossomed quickly through the years Of sunshine smiles and dewdrop tears Then opened up your wondrous bloom Whose beauty many eyes consumed When you discovered nature’s bliss Of honey bee’s exotic kiss You left the garden’s tranquil life And settled free as man and wife Taffeta petals now full grown With little rosebuds of your own Your radiant beauty still exists And penetrates the morning mist How much I love you, no one knows My crimson colored velvet rose Elizabeth Santos (For my daughter, Christina) |

Liz, this is beautiful!! What a wonderful way to honour your daughter! I can feel your love for her glowing in your words. Lovely, lovely! Love and hugs, Lizzie "Poetry is the true expression of my soul, it is my ultimate means of communication. It is my rainbow of delight." |

What a wonderful poem, Elizabeth - It's absolutely lovely - and, of course, overflowing with metaphoric allusions. Your poetry never ever disappoints me... As for the extended metaphor - You compare your daughter beautifully to a velvet rose. You do have some lines that step upon the precipice of uncovering your "extended" metaphor - In its purest form, you would be writing about a rose alone - with no specific reference to your daughter, but your reader would know without a doubt that you were writing about her... Did I mention that I REALLY like this poem??.. |
