Hey, Everyone! These are my attempts at writing all eight versions of the Englyn. How'd I do? Englyn Penfyr Consists of a verse of three lines. The first line has ten syllables and the other two have seven each. The seventh, eighth or ninth syllables of the first line introduces the rhyme and this is repeated on the last syllable of the other two lines. The fourth syllable of the second line echoes the final syllable of the first through either rhyme or consonance. This week, this month, this moment will fly by. When from the sky rain does spill, just as fast, it rolls downhill. Englyn Milwr Consists of three seven-syllable lines. All three lines rhyme. Steam rolls up into my nose. Muscles limp, my breathing slows. One more sip, I start to doze. Englyn Unodl Union Consists of four lines of ten, six, seven and seven syllables. The seventh, eighth or ninth syllable of the first line introduces the rhyme and this is repeated on the last syllable of the other three lines. The part of the first line after the rhyme alliterates with the first part of the second line. A robin’s egg, a baby boy, the sky, balloons, a martini, crayons, the sea, a berry, the Facebook logo, Slurpee. Englyn Unodl Crwca This englyn is made up of four lines of seven, seven, ten and six syllables. The last syllable of the first, second and last lines rhyme and seventh, eighth or ninth syllable of the third line all rhyme. Joshua Minzner loves me. We might not always agree (he likes diet coke and tea is my choice.) He fills my heart with glee. Englyn Cyrch This version has four lines of seven syllables each. The final syllables of the first second and last line rhyme. The last syllable of the third line rhymes with the second, third or fourth syllable of the last line. Paper pages bound and torn, more beautiful when they’re worn. A kindle just can’t compare. Oh, beware! To books I’m sworn. Englyn Proest Dalgron In this englyn, there are four seven-syllable lines that half rhyme with each other. Inside me now lives this poem. Poetry has its own bone. In my body, words find home, ‘til onto paper they’re strewn. Englyn Lleddfbroest This is identical to the englyn proest dalgron except that the half rhymes must use the ae, oe, wy, and ei diphthongs. We’ve been dancing toe to toe, hanging round my neck’s a lei, the weather at home’s snowy, the worst here is sea algae. Englyn Proest Gadwynog In this version there are four lines of seven syllables. The first and third lines rhyme and the second and fourth half rhyme on the same vowel sound as the full rhyme syllables. The end is now upon us. The smoothest paper has cut the most calloused palms, and thus we’ve learned we need more than luck. -Amber |
