Balladeer, Couldn't help but notice that one of the most recurrent problems to come up deals with meter. Perhaps an exercise in which we look up five or ten words from the dictionary ( paying attention to where the accents are placed ) then incorporating those words into a poem. I thought that might help form the mental image necessary to keep meter intact. Just a thought. Doc |

I have trouble hearing where the accents fall in words with three or more syllables. I can usually look those up - but the ones that truly puzzle me are one syllable words and determining if they are stress words or not. Does that make any ding danged sense? Thanks, Doc. This is a good suggestion. Alison |

Alison, I am so glad to know that I am not the only one who has this problem. I have the exact same trouble. That is why I have so much trouble getting the assignments done. If we can get that problem solved, we'll be in good shape, huh? |

Not a bad idea at all, moose man. It may help to some degree. Meter is never easy. For some people it comes more naturally, like Doc Moose and Elizabeth Santos, along with Kit McCallum. For others, it is torture! The best way, of course, is to read your poem out loud and listen to where the accents fall. Plan your meter. Do you want to write it in iambic? i THINK that I shall NEver SEE a POEM as LOVely AS a TREE. trochaic? ONCE upON a MIDnight DREAry anapestic? by the LIGHT of the SIlvery MOON didactic? MANy a TEAR had to FALL Perhaps you wish to combine them...iambic - anapestic - anapestic i KNOW that i'll SEE her sweet FACE whenEVer i COME to this PLACE anapestic - iambic - anapestic and i KNOW i'll FIND when she's NEAR that my HEART will BEAT loud and CLEAR The meter must be thought out and adhered to, religiously. How does one get all the da-dums in the right places? My suggestion is...songs. Listen to and study songs. They almost always have the accents in the right places. They have to in order to maintain the rhythm. Sing along with them and pay attention to the accents. Write them down and discover what meters were used in their construction. THEY asked me HOW i KNEW my true LOVE was TRUE,...................................A-I-A-I I of COURSE repLIED, SOMEthing HERE inSIDE CANnot BE deNIED......................I-I-T-I-I-T-I-I THEY said someDAY you'll FIND all who LOVE are BLIND,...................................A-I-A-I WHEN your HEART'S on FIRE, YOU must REalIZE, SMOKE gets IN your EYES.....I-I-T-I-I-T-I-I T=trochaic A=anapestic I=iambic...all lines begin with an accented syllable to begin the meter. You can see that them meter is exact and that's why the song sings so smoothly. It can be very interesting to dissect songs like this to understand why the construction makes them so lyrical. |

Just a suggestion for those of you who are participating in this workshop. I have created a file with my assignments and many of Balladeer's comments to that assignment. I also save tidbits like this in there. It kind of helps me - Kind of. I am deaf to meter. A |

That's for sure, Balladeer. Meter seems to be so hard. You know how long I have been struggling to learn the meter. Expecially Iambic. I'm just like Alison! I am deaf to meter. Although, I can get my point across. LOL! |

I'm confused, too, CC. You spoke of iambic and daDUM but the lines you posted are anything but. EVerything ELSE you SAID SURly went OVer my HEAD you said and my head are the two iambs here. Wen a word begins with an accented syllable, it can not be iambic. I can understand how confusing all of this must be to one starting out. You need to be familiar with the different forms of meter, the iambic, trochaic, anapestic and didactic. Look them up in the computer and study them. Look for previous lessons here in the workshop that deal with them. It's not something you will pick up in a day or two. It will take some work and perseverance. |

No, I wasn't saying those lines were iambic, I was just saying that's the only one that I knew that was. I will look them up... |
