Turning of the Mind

Circa 1969

As the sun sets slowly in the west
another day is passing, having tried for best.
I’ve thought of you more, certainly not less;
what I’ll think tomorrow is only a guess.

The tradewinds of my life pass,
I grow older, never again the lass
that wandered and searched the sky ~
for I know that all things eventually pass by.

As I reach for a wiseness that is
considered young to my elders who are far wiser,
I feel the days speeding by
reaching for a goal much faster, for I.

Who am I to slow time down?
Yet why must my path be grooved in the ground,
when my heart yearns to soar the air;
and for a moment, I turn devil-may-care.

Again that silken haired child am I,
set back then to ask the inevitable “why” ~
waiting for an answer, then asking “how” or “when”,
I’d wait for my answer, and not leave until then.

But as I turn around and open my eyes,
much too quickly I come to realize
that the past is behind me, the future is ahead.
So I’ll think to say what others have not said.

The flicker of a growing flame
throws shadows at my own life’s game,
making me think of other names,
and I turn to you again.

For around you my life is now centered,
and I find that a bit of trouble makes the splendor
a lot more real and its’ also worthwhile
when I see that I can make you smile.

Things are always getting better
as disappointment can come from the best;
and this is why I say, dear friend
that I think of you more, and never less.
