On facing fears (real and imagined)
~this is about a recurrent dream I have had~

one step forward
I face my fear
two steps back
I'll go nowhere near

willing my feet on
mind over terror
I extend a tremulous hand
for the rail

my toe tests the bridge's floor
like a swimmer for water
not quite committed
not quite sure the bridge
will hold
as it sways and moves
under my weight

one arm cradles a small child
the other clutches the rail
with adrenaline strength
no matter what the prize
I seek on the far side
my unwilling feet will traverse
no further on this bridge

one step forward
I face my fear
two steps back
I'll go nowhere near

Wow, what a nightmare! Gave me the shivers!
Expertly expressed...as usual!

You put me right there with you! I clutched that child tighter...whew! After reading this I don't like bridges anymore! But the symbolism is not lost either....how hard is it to take that first step..unsure of whether or not the bridge will hold!

To face ones fears....hard enough as it is, and then dream about it...a nightmare indeed. I really enjoyed the way you put it into words.

Isabelle I used to have a similar sort of dream...trying to cross a river. The last time I had the dream, my arms turned to wings and I flew over. I've never had the dream again since. Strange!
May you grow those same wings, and carry the child safely across that bridge

Dreams can be horrific, especially when they recur. A dream analyst would say, by this dream, you are suffering from uncertainty and frustration in your own life, not to mention a fear of the unknown.

I dreamed I ate a 15 pond marshmellow one time...I woke up and my pillow was gone!!!
