It's--You've Guessed It

We think we've gotten smarter.
We think we know much more
Than our parents, who at least knew
What they were paying for.
Today professions pile on jargon,
Profiteer through obfuscations,
But let me make this point clear
With some timely illustrations.

Dentists drill through our enamel
And chip away our plaque,
And find shadows on our X-Rays
To keep us coming back.
Attorneys draft our contracts
Using words we've never heard,
Then offer to translate them,
At twenty bucks a word.
In the past, my doctor told me
To drink orange juice and get rest.
Now he scribbles a referral
For a thousand dollar test.

But at siphoning our dollars
From our pockets into theirs
By means of mumbo-jumbo
and impenetrable airs,
The profession that takes the prize
For using all the tricks,
Well, of course, it's no contest,
You've guessed it--Politics!
