The Ones Who Came Before

Monolithic basalt spires-
Weary sentinels-
O'er a kingdom long since dust
Where no human dwells.
Cities high above the ground
Built into the wall
But their builders no one knows
Nor what brought on their fall.
Was it sudden change of clime
To cause their crops to fail?
Or other nat'ral happenstance
That broke the food chain frail?
Perhaps some raiders from the North
A New World Mongol horde
Slew the people in the field
While plundering the stores.
What e'er the cause they disappeared
But if you'd like a fright-
Then roll your blankets for a crisp
Mesa Verde night.
And as the Arizona moon
Illuminates the skies
The "Old Ones" ghosts come out to play
Before your widened eyes.
They work, they play, they live again
Beneath the midnight sky
As as they did in ages past
They run, they scream, they die.
So roll your blankets, pack a meal
You've quite a lot in store
If you dare to go and see-
"The Ones Who Came Before".

Another excellent work. I was a history major so I thoroughly enjoy your works.
The Anasazi are a fascinating culture.

Your pistol appears to be loaded with great ammo, gunslinger. Another enjoyable read.
