My youth was one of vicissitude, ...We moved from town to town, My life was one of loneliness, ...To cope I played the clown. When you're a child and have no friends, ...Life can be so cruel, It hurts so much to be unseen, ...And so I played the fool. Every year a different school, ...The new kid in the class, Teachers did not like my wit, ...Instead they thought was sass. That was until my freshman year, ...I still recall the day, When Mrs. James called out my name, ...For after class to stay. Mike, she said, you talk so much, ...A lawyer you should be, There is no doubt that you can do, ...work better than a C. Then she smiled and said that's all, ...I then went on my way, I doubt she ever gave a thought, ...To what she did that day. Soon we moved, another school, ...But I was not the same, Since the day a teacher cared, ...Enough to call my name. Now I'm grown, no more a clown, ...I've often thought to reach, A teacher who by simple act, ...Did so much more than teach. |

You should track down this teacher and give her the poem, I think she would like to see that she made in impact in a students life. Great dedication, was a pleasure to read! ------------------ ~*~ Time erases and rewrites all the lines. What remains is the poetry! ~*~ |

Mike, this brought tears to my eyes! What a loving tribute to Mrs.James! I have often been thinking of late, especially in terms of my grandchildren, of the impact of my words and actions on their little hearts and what they will remember when they think of Mom-Mom in their later years! I aim to leave a good impression and leave them with memories golden. As Mrs. James did for you! If she is still around, I hope you can track her down and get this to her. I'm sure it will warm her heart! ------------------ Denise |

Excellent work, Mike. The world needs more people like Mrs. James......but not more lawyers. |

There are several posts in the original Open Poetry forum about teachers and the long-lasting impact good ones can have on our lives, but none more eloquent than this poem. Those of us fortunate enough to find one (and we rarely find more than one) will remember them for the rest of our lives. It's good to see you posting again, Mike. You've been sorely missed, and this tribute to Mrs. James epitomizes exactly why… |
