Autumnal chill makes the air crisp and cold.
The once green leaves' color begins to change.
Colors turn to bright orange, red, and gold.
This random palette nature does arrange.

Gray squirrels tussle over each acorn found.
Songbirds fluff their feathers against the chill.
Woodchucks fatten for their sleep underground.
Lonely red-tailed hawks come in for the kill.

Chipmunks scamper about looking for seeds.
Garter snakes are the last to hibernate.
Summer's bounty provides for Winter's needs.
Ducks fly south along side a new-found mate.

Lake's edge freezes with a skim of new ice.
Forest undergrowth falls into decay.
Barred owl preys through the Winter on mice.
Around the lake frolicking otters play.

White-tailed deer start to yard up in a herd.
Antlers are rubbed clean on the trunks of trees.
Leaves drifting downward by the wind are stirred.
The chill air tastes of Winter's first hard freeze.

Slate gray sky begins drifting stray snowflakes.
Upon the forest Winter's grip does creep.
Long it will be until the forest wakes.
Waiting for Spring the dormant land will sleep.

This is a very well written poem....my favorite season is and has always been Autumn. It doesn't last long enough in Alaska. Oh well, maybe I'll see it in Oregon this year!!

Thank You for painting a beatiful picture for all of us!!
