The gray old mansion was a nesting place for pigeons, its secret doors the domicile of spiders, its winding staircase decorated by cobwebs. It filled our summers with old age and imagination. We rang the bell and ran, delicious fear a game, and dared each other to peek inside dirty windows. At night we’d swear we saw a face peeking from the upstairs window, that sneered until even our shadows ran from one another. Gone now decrepit splendor and all the stories you told us locked inside the doors of childhood. Echoes of once was have given way to low slung concrete. But, I remember. In my dreams I still ring the bell and run. |
