The black wall An army of men gave their all. We placed their names upon a wall. Each scratch a name, each name a soul, Each soul a toll in protocol. The black wall rides the earth today, Names of the dead put on display. Each graven body in a sheath, Each grave in trust, a cross, a wreath. |

I saw the Memorial while I was in DC. I didn't know any of the names as living, breathing people. That didn't prevent tears from welling up in my eyes. Thanks for the memory, Seymour. |

Seymore, so much said in so few words......this is wonderful. As you can see, it inspired me ![]() Row after row of names engraved Upon a jet black wall I do not know a single one But Lord, I owe them all Years and memories have passed Since they died at war Let this serve as our reminder That there shall be no more Let us build no other walls Upon them names to grace But rather put an end to war And brother man embrace |

Ah Sey...this is really great. I visited DC and too, was really moved. To know of a marker like that from pictures you've only seen in a book - can't even begin to make you feel the same as if you've been able to touch the names...see the wall...and all the offerings left by loved-ones who still morn and remember...I have a book called "Offerings at the Wall", which shows actual photos of things left with the story behind it....It makes it all real...tears at your heart for those who are named. Thank you for sharing a short but bitterly sweet poem. ------------------ ~~ Lift your head high - spread your "words" and fly - - poetFemmeFatale |

I recently had the opportunity to see the Moving Wall, and it truly lived up to its name -- I was moved, even though I have never lost a loved one to war. The names of so many dead were overwhelming, and grim testimony to the enormous destructive power of humanity. Thank you for this poem, Seymour -- it has reminded me to count my many blessings. --Kess ------------------ You cannot choose the way of your death, but the path you choose will determine its own end. |

I assure you, Sy, that there is no structure on earth that holds the power of that wall. I still shiver, remembering standing in front of it and coming to the cold reality that every name on that wall was a grieving mother's sunshine, a father's hope, and worst of all...still a child in most cases. Thank you for rekindling the memory. ------------------ Michael Anderson Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream? |

Skyfyre, Glad you got to see the wall and felt its presence. Micheal, All you said is true, found it hard to write and still don't think I did it justice. Thanks again. |

Thank you for this Sy. That wall is a masterpiece and a perfect tribute to our service men. Your words add a lot to my unforgetable experience of slowly passing by and staring at the names written there. martyjo |
