We made the rise in the late morning air, Following a trail we'd found through the trees. Our love of nature had drawn us here, Two friends, one trail, you in the lead. Most of my life I've loved the backpack, So, it seemed natural that we'd be friends. Two equals following each unbeaten path, Just to see where the trail head ends. We've been friends for quite some time, Though, I'd never believed I could before Consider a woman just a good friend of mine, Without considering anything more. And so, here we are, moving down through, Swaying trees that frame our downhill run. A breeze cools us and dries the dew With the help of the late morning sun. That's strange, you just distracted me, Your hair changing colors with your stride. We continue to move down through trees Softly bathed in the shifting sunlight. I shift my gaze to the trail again, And resume matching your measured tread. Strange. My eyes focus where your knees bend, And not on the path instead. Was it ten steps ago that I began to feel this way? We come off the slope where the hill ends, Just before us is a peaceful glade. So we pause there, just us two friends, In the dappled edge of the shade. The emerald blades of swaying grass, Softly beckon in the gentle breeze. Accentuated with buttercups of brass, Rising softly up to our knees. That's strange. You just distracted me As I helped you take off your pack. I could hardly help in this state but see Your breasts as you arched your back. Was it 50 steps ago that I began to feel this way? My hands slide up along your side, As I lift your pack and then let it go. Your smile catches me by surprise, "There's a lake, I don't mind if its cold." Your smile teases the corners of your mouth, As you quickly slip off your clothes. Standing in wonder, but still in doubt, Was it only a hundred steps ago? I join you in the crystal lake nearby us, We playfully swim and splash in the sun. Then we lay in the grass to let the breeze dry us As we revel in the journey we've begun. You roll to me and whisper my name, Our first kiss makes me finally whole. And in sight of God and without shame, You take my mind, my body, my soul. Was it really only a hundred steps ago That being with you started changing my life? I awoke to learn what you already know, We are destined to be husband and wife. The glade is there at the trail head's end, Just downhill through the swaying trees. Creating new lovers out of lifetime friends, With its lake, its meadow, its breeze. |

Ah yes.... what a wonderful place it is. You captured it in brilliant colors and beautiful style. I proposed to my wife on such a hike in the back woods of our local mountains... standing upon a rocking outcrop. She likes to say that she got her rock upon our rock. Anyway... thanks for a wonderful journey. |

Thank you one and all for your accolades. I started writing this poem about a two months ago and then shelved it as work pressures heated up and as my muse took off for the Bahamas (or wherever it is that muses go when they betray us with their silence). I was going to spice it up with more explicit details, but I thought the details would have diminished the more important story - two friends becoming so much more than just friends. Chalk one up for my hopelessly romantic side. |
