John the Gum Man That’s what the children call him. He sets time to the day jaunting down the street for a can of soup and the paper, eighty-six years and straight-backed slender. He has one arm, lost the other in some long ago war, or in the mines (the story varies) "Hi John," the children shout. "Got any gum?" He reads them with his eyes. Mothers who didn’t know feared his intent, a policemen he had known all his life tried to tell him why. The question is still on his face. |

UK...i agree with u and i think they miss it because some folks do not judge a piece by title or what it says...they only read and comment on postings by certain poets...as evidenced by the many replies certain poets repeatedly receive. Spreading comments around would be beneficial to more poets and broaden the reader's perspective i think. |
