The Genie
by © Richard J. Budig 1996

He was a leftover hippie,
A minstrel from the past
With a guitar on his back,
And a dirty shirt and a bottle in a sack

He sat in the park
Down among the shadows
In a pile of dry leaves,
With one of his songs upon the gentle breeze

I know you, he sang,
I know all of your hearts
And all of their lonely rooms,
Of promises made by the light of the moon

And I know that face
The one you see in your head . . .
Sun dappled hair blowin' in the wind,
And ruby red lips that smile without sin

And I know all of your voices.
I hear them whenever I sing:
Come back sweet girl, they say
Let me be in love with you just one more day

Well, if it was in my power,
This guitar would be a magic lamp
And I'd be a genie all the long day
And she'd appear before you when I sing and play

Finally, as evening closed,
This troubadour from another time
Hung his guitar on his back
And took a long drink from his paper sack

And then he went like he came,
Shufflin' along on old rope sandals
Hummin' and singin' about a girl he once knew
And about "all the places I still look for you"

Broker6 ... this is lovely, haunting and oh, so familiar. Seen and heard this hippie on many a street corner. Like it very much.

Kewl!
Shawn Mullins has a song out about an old guy he ran into at Twin Rocks, Oregon
this has the same type of flavor. I liked this muchly
