state of confusion

Sleep

He lays down daydreams at twilight
Mapping footprints in wet sand
Imagines being captured
Surrender to the sandman

Sleep, his illusive mistress
Sets course for his timeless hours
Of three endless nights and days
Wandering down dark hallways
Sweet family sleeps, quietly he
Slips away into the darkness

Walking past virtually vacant homes
Save for a few lit in flickering blue
Faint sounds ricochet, echo
Sometimes he overhears fights
Husbands and wives, or
Lovers lost in pleasure,
Barking of backyard dogs

Walking the deadened town
Kicking leaves, shops shuttered
Silent streets, waving to the beat cops
They shake their heads, visions of vampires

Sometimes overcome by loneliness
But mostly he embraces being alone
Observing life differently than most
His perspective forever changed
By his altered view of the rising sun

Succumb to serene slumber,
Dance of the dreamless on
Seamless colorless tapestry woven

This was a neat twist on something I do every night
Keep it up!
