Ode to the NoSee'ums A pleasure of summer that rates high on my list of that season's delights, not to be missed, is gathering the family, tin buckets in hand, caravaning thru the country, to blackberry land. Afar, you can see them, inviting, plump treasure, beckoning unwary ones, to pick them at leisure. Unanointedly rushing there, leaves one who figures, "What is this itching me?" Nosee'ums ...chiggers! The sounds of the water, shaded from the sun, where strolling cool paths beneath trees is such fun, young and old enjoy it, like going back in time, pioneer days, the West, with mountains to climb. From all these efforts of both body and mind, pleasant this awareness, the urge to recline, a rest for the weary, how lovely! "What that's in ears, eyes and nose?" Nosee'ums,...gnats! A rarer satisfaction could hardly be found, the pitter patter of raindrops, the sound they make on the tin of a house we rent at the beach each summer. That time we spent, with our kids, their children, in a storm, soon past, was noisy and terrifying, a memory to last! Then the beach thru the grass, "Last ones, sushi eaters!" "Black stuff, on my ankles?" Nosee'ums,...skeeters! There are miseries galore to rehearse another, when in discourse we try to top each other with the "aint-it-awfuls" that frequent our door. Tall tales we can tell--that business before Tom, Dick, or Harry and the one not his wife, or this one's expecting, Joe's crisis, mid-life, relishing running down--reverse ego trips!
