Sarah

I Sarai's Petition

"Father, Sumer women when beautiful,
feel as if life's the honored stage
for our performance, a dutiful
subject adding our history's page.

Loving eyes, joyfully follow,
faithful in their observance,
we the highest their dreams allow
them reach, praying a single chance.

That they to sleep, dreaming my bed,
uplifts a knowing smile that flies
to choose wealthy Abram instead,
let Sarai's beauty none despise"

A righteous man, I'd be his wife
who treasures beauty with his eyes,
knowingly seeking firstborn life,
with many after, healthy and wise.

II The Concubine

The years fly by a barren lot,
withered dreams strewn in their wake,
I am the wife childbirth forgot,
when beauty fades, could he forsake?

Pride laid low, the slave I sent
that from her womb I might enjoy
what mine would not, despite tears spent
to have and hold his baby boy.

He is such joy! His smallest move
I follow with a mother's eyes
and dream for him what I approve,
for Abram's line on faith relies.

III Banishment

For thirteen years I watched him grow,
each year the heart grew fonder, till
to me, past hope, the fates bestow
my own, at which the past stood still.

Abram's world by faith made known,
this time shrunken in size for me,
who could not see Ishmael grown
a rival choice of master to be.

I sent one son we loved in heart
away, far from the place he grew,
to unknown lands, wrenching apart,
without warning the family he knew,

that Isaac, needing time to grow
in strength, might learn to walk with God
like Abraham, and let faith show
righteous paths He insists be trod.
