Rosey O’Grady and Billy Joe Dean-
She was the Fort Stockton Rodeo Queen.
Billy rode bulls in the rodeo game-
They all just knew he was destined for fame.

Bill wasn’t tall, he was thin as a whip-
Broad in the shoulders and lean through the hip.
And ego as big as his hat brim was wide,
Billy had plenty of Cowboy Pride.

Billy loved Rosey, and Rosey loved Bill...
Their romance did blossom as romances will,
When Rosey agreed to become Billy’s wife,
He thought he had all he could want in this life.

All through the summer Bill rode every bull.
High in the standings, his pockets were full.
Rosey would wait for his call and would know-
He would be safe till the next rodeo.

Bill made a bad draw at the Odessa show-
And Rosey had promised this time she would go..
Bill drew him a spinner, a fighter to boot,
Gray death was a waiting for Bill in the chute.

Bill dropped his riggin’ across the bull’s hide-
Pulled on his glove, and he dropped down astride,
He took a deep seat as they pulled his rope tight,
He looked to his wrap to make sure it was right.

He pulled down his hat, then he nodded, “Outside”-
The chute gate swung open, Bill started his ride.
Out of the chute they just seemed explode-
This was the worst one that Bill ever rode.

Up on his hand, he is doing real well-
He’ll make his eight seconds observers could tell,
Over the cheers and the roar of the crowd-
Bill hears the buzzer, he’s feeling real proud.

To stay on a bull is a hard thing to do-
And every bullrider will tell you that’s true,
The place where the battle is won, or it’s lost,
Is just how successful you are getting off.

Bill jerked his wrap and he thought he was clear,
He slipped and he fell, and his heart filled with fear.
The bull caught poor Billy with both of his horns-
A snort and a toss and the kid was airborne.

They knew he was hurt as the bullfighters tried-
To distract the bull, and to drag him outside,
Rosey was calling Bill’s name as she ran-
And dropped to the dirt there beside of her man.

Billy was bleeding real bad from his mouth-
He whispered to Rosey, “Babe, I’m headed south”.
There in the dirt was the death of the dream,
Of Rosey O’Grady and Billy Joe Dean.

But with autumn leaf she perish'd, long time ago..."
