The Whispering Campaign

They’ve begun the whispering campaign
Twice I’ve seen them pointing this way
Looking at me with such disdain
Others just look, then look away

This park bench is hard and cold anyway
Brushing newspapers aside, scattering
birdseed; the sun warming my way
Stretching; a good day for meandering

In the days before my Tommy died
Back when the kids gave a hoot about me
Hell, even farther back, as a blushing bride
We led a life of culture at University

The esteemed Englsish professor, me!
Campus life, many crazy cooky friends
He was my better half, I was happy
Without him, I could not even pretend

Now I walk with poise to the painted crew
That insists on staring and whispering so
Deciding to play a little prank or two
Just so they know I know, you know?

I shuffle along and abruptly stop there
Three ladies looking so very refined
I say: “Do you know Moliere? Voltaire?”
Me thinks they think I have lost my mind

I adjust my knit cap, primp my stringy hair
Smile my toothless grin (always gets them!)
I quote Shakespeare with an elegant flair
Why are they leaving? I just can’t fathom!

I block their escape and burst into song
My version of “Vesti la giubba”, sung lustily
With verve, but now they are gone
I dig in my pocket, pull out my money

I head for a kiosk for my tea and scone
The old man there treats me with respect
He knows. I wink, pay him and head home
I smile; another day’s work, no regrets

I enjoyed this one greatly, I can relate in certain ways to what you are saying in it.

Thinking is just what a great many people think they are doing when they are merely rearranging their predjudices.

I can relate on certain levels. I also think too many missed this one, it's quite well done, so back to the top with you!

An interesting piece Corinne... something about books and covers, yes? I like the style. And welcome to PIP.
