This tree is rooted
in gossamer
watered by tears
of porcelain birds
trading sorrows on their
frilly branches.

Not thunder's strident rant
nor floods
infecting guiltless soil
nor ice
sheathing silvered boughs
amend its upward course.

It has no fruit
to bear
no seed to drop.
It nothing serves
except the reaching up.
