Far above the rundown graveyard ‘neath the shiny old church spire As rising moon turns ancient brass to eerie orange fire A stealthy figure waits alone, his victim to receive T’would be the first of many such on this All Hallows Eve The full moon made his hunger grow, his boldness grew as well With evil eyes he scanned below and near as he could tell A man he spied asleep down there against an old tree trunk He had no way of knowin’ then, t’was Mike the village drunk With sprouted wings the creature pounced and landed silently Beside the old inebriate, asleep against the tree With fangs of yellow, eyes of black and breath of ancient dank The creature found the old man’s throat, bit him and then drank The drunk was down a pint or so before the vampire knew This wasn’t just A-positive, it was a stronger brew He rocked back on his haunches, his head began to spin His bloody lips curled back to form an evil vampire grin “Wake up” he shook the village drunk, “Wake up and tell me how You happen to have blood like this, you have to tell me now” Old Mike smiled up through sleepy eyes and gave the beast a wink “I’ll tell you what you want to know but first buy me a drink” “A drink is what I had in mind when first I saw you there A drink it is and then perhaps your secret you will share What drink do you prefer good sir, some water from the pail?” “No water please,” Old Mike smiled back, I’d rather drink some ale” In the pub they call McGinty’s Place they sauntered to the bar The drunkard with his smilin’ face, the vampire so bizarre “A tankard of your finest ale,” Mike told the barman Tim “And when it’s time for payin’ up just give the bill to him” “One ale it is,” the barman said, “And good sir what for you?” “A bloody Mary will do fine,” Could be real blood, who knew? “And so,” the vampire started, “You drink this ale a lot?” Old Mike lied “Hardly ever sir, my secret this is not” Mike held a silver flask up high and took a long hard pull “Tis this that you have tasted sir, of this my blood is full The vampire grabbed the silver flask and drank the contents down He shuddered and began to laugh but then began to frown He rattled and he shook a bit, he hollered and he squirmed He scrambled round in circles like a puppy bein’ wormed He grabbed his throat in terror, his skin began to burn “What poison have you brought me in this lovely silver urn?” “Why ‘tis only holy water Father Michael gave to me T’was bringin’ it to widow Rourke, she’s crippled don’t you see She uses it to pray at home but I can get some more” By then the dreaded vampire though lay dead upon the floor The town turned out to celebrate the village vampire’s death And if you’ve a word of sympathy, you’d best just save your breath For now at Old McGinty’s Place they serve a strange nightcap And a keg of Father Michael’s brew they always keep on tap |
