Listening to every heart

0 posted 1999-10-29 01:52 PM

You Are Here

You were there Dad, as was I
sitting silently, closely by
and with us sat the shadow of death,
I heard it with every labored breath.

I knew you were not sore afraid
not the way which my hand in yours laid,
an easy grasp of mine you tried to make
but strength was going, I felt you shake.

Words were not said, no verbal tools,
but my mind and saddening heart were full
to think that silence filled the room
and yet I did not heed the gloom.

For what can be said between daughter and Dad,
no time to be happy, but no time to be sad,
this silent, precious time was enhanced
because of the beauty of life’s chance.

My epoch moments with you were all mine,
sweetly silvered, never to vanish in time,
different from my siblings, they knew others;
while silently for you I tended your covers.

Ah Dad, it’s been some long, long while
since last your earth’s voice or your wry smile
came soft to my ears, delighted my eyes,
or heard you tender your sage wisdom wise.

But you are here, Dad, you are here
whispering faintly in my ear
come late at night, or early morn
making me glad I was yours when born.

Keep being my conscience, keep being my Dad
keep making me happy, even when sad,
keep being here, for here you are,
my Dad, my friend, my sage, my star.

Thank you Pepper. Somedays the feeling of his presence is stronger than others. Like today. So glad you came in for the read.

Sunshine: What a wonderful tribute... I'm thankful for every day my father is still with us almost having lost him to several heart attacks. I'm thankful that my children have their Papa about and that he's had the joy of their smiles and love. I'm near tears as I write this now and I thank you Sunshine for that feeling. Well done.

Thank you suthern, for reading.

Andrew, now you've got me tearing up. Where's my Kleenex? I'm so glad you can still share special moments with your Dad, and that your children have their Papa. [That was my Dad's name for the grandkids, too.] My dad passed away 11 years ago, and sometimes it seems like only yesterday, and with both parents gone, I can only now imagine what it will be like to grow old, for I no longer have the best mentors here to guide me.

Beautiful tribute Sunshine, and I'm so glad you still feel him with you. I hope when my beloved Dad passes on, I'll still feel him with me. Thanks for sharing that very personal poem.

Such heartfelt words Sunshine. That's just how I feel about my mom. Even though she is still alive, she has Alzeihmers Disease and it's like slowly, very, very slowly watching her die. I just spent the day with her today and your poem really hit home. Thanks for such stirring emotions.

'Deer, your comments mean much to me. Thank you for them, and for reading. You know I put my heart and soul into whatever I write, and take nothing lightly.

Denise, Hoot, as you know, it is too bad that all of us cannot write tributes to our father, thank you for your words.

Isis, I am sure you will feel such comfort from your memories. I am agrateful that you still have your Dad here to love.

Justme, thank you for reading. I am sorry that your mother has to live with AD. I will pray for you, and for her, and hope that you can salvage the goodness of her still being here.
