Shadows linger on the porch and dapple the path beneath the elm. A steady creak comes from the swing where just the tip of a shoe is moving in lazy rhythm. Crickets sing in the garden where a white cat sits. From the house the sound of children, the slam of a door, a scream, then laughter. A lady whispers by on the sidewalk longing in her eyes. She is old and thin and looks empty. To my day-gladdened eyes, a pale phantom in the moon. Sorrow and gladness tangle. She is not me. |
