All my life, I've eluded
Certain deadly perils. I'm proud
That I'm still in one piece. But
Rather than boast out loud
Of how I managed to dodge
Pigeon waste aimed at my head,
Or of breaking only one tooth
On a prune pit baked into bread,
Or of leaping swiftly aside
And mucking up only one shoe
When a bicycle messenger thought
That a red light meant "Barrel on
through,"
I'll cite my piece de resistance,
The maneuver I execute best,
The challenge that strains my will
And puts my nerves to the test.
You see, I commute by auto
From city to suburb each day.
(To get some idea of the risk
Check the car insurance premium I
pay).
The only point I'm making is
I've survived in spite of the
peril
From drivers uncouth and barbaric,
Not to mention those stupid and
feral.
But one driver may end all that.
One driver may put me under.
It's the driver who speeds along
With attention torn asunder.
Right brain is tooling through
traffic,
Right hand is gripping the wheel,
While left hand supports a cell
phone
And left brain works on a deal!

Oh, I love this, Dom Mart. I have seen this to and it is terrible. In some states it is a violation of the law to do that. Should be against the law everywhere. You have xpressed my feelings exactly!
Love the poem.

Unfortunately, this happens in my country too....a lot...and it annoys me so much and worries me even more. Very well expressed ! I enjoyed reading it. : )

This is wonderful, Dom. How true! I don't think they realize how much they are distracted when they are doing this.

You think your insurance is high...my agent told me that the county where I live is the highest in the nation...good ole Houston, TX.

I liked your poem a lot.

Well then - Insurance is certainly at an all time high but I still try to stay in one piece - But how is it that I still managed to get in the way of seagull droppings?? (true fact)
...and I certainly agree about the cell phone..
