Rebecca I. Night Messenger Awakening, troubling uneasiness hovering, outside remembering, as if called, majesty beckoning the bride to attend, the echoes a subliminal hearing, unique lingering presence, cognizant that another dared to speak my name in this sanctuary, no escort or invitation extended, life-risking adventure, unsought imitation of boorish bravado, goat tender with a dream, prince of tents, with me a languid maid,....the dolt! Yet despite the incense I broke not the silence. Angelic appearance, I saw none. It was then a calm voice announced, "Out of the setting sun ten camels will come far, from future home and kin. At the well, welcome the trusted friend of a lord by the sea, to foretell destiny's promises. Two nations, twin scions you will bear, enemies, one kneeling, one fleeing to an uncle's lair." II. Lord Isaac Stops Laughing Incessant, unrythmic swaying, a moving camel's back, predesigned despairing, conspiring, capricious fates attack brides-to-be, rancor sown, beauty flown, nauseant nursemaid distraught, "I'll either walk or die!" and dare a male upbraid! At twilight, slowly one approached the resting caravan, messengers unneeded to announce fate's prenominant man, sauntering leisurely, not a care in the world it would seem, me dusty, hair unkempt, an unveiled disaster supposed to gleam, radiate an awaited allure...the dolt! In due time frantic preparation concluded a creation so sublime as to stun Lord Isaac's unbelieving senses to silence, matriarchal awning the setting, man and wife, recompense in beauty deserved by immortals, long promised compact, covenantee blessings converged on Rebecca and Isaac. III Esau and Jacob A barren, unfruited twenty years of prayerful waiting, terminated in twins. El Shaddai, His angel relating long ago childbirth news, has a sense of humor, I avow. Two decades passing by, wonder how His urgent sense of now amuses, recuses a woman's child birth pangs, contuses with a twin as if an afterthought, foretold of future uses years before. "I change not," He says, but mystery cloaks His ways. As unlike as ever two brothers, distrustful all their days, the hunter, the schemer in Isaac's later years, his blessing expected. But Jacob contrived, to blind eyes professing that he was the firstborn, received what's only once given. Esau thought to kill him, Jacob to the Tigris was driven awaiting forgiveness. Abetting handmaid to His glory, Supplanter, I named him, prophesied history's story. --BGvH . . . . Women of the Word Poems From the Goober Tree http://nathoo.wustl.edu/goober_tree.htm |

Great telling of the story of rebecca HA! Loved the way you have her fitful waking in the first verse and the dusty camel ride in the second. |

This one carried me along -- and I much enjoyed the ride. Biblical stories are by far the most intriguing, and you presented this one quite expertly. --K. ------------------ You cannot choose the way of your death, but the path you choose will determine its own end. |
