And If We Said The Words Too Much...

It’s been pointed out by many loving hearts
that three little words, and people won’t part;
but perhaps sometimes, it’s said too much,
and a strangling comes from love’s touch.

I say “I love you” to dear friends,
sometimes it comes back to me then;
I say “I love you” to my kids dear,
even “adopted” a few, and keep them near.

But can the words be ever less
than what we wish and want to express?
For when “I love you” has turned to hate,
how then best can we relate?

Then to press on when “I love you” is said
and ask the question “why?” instead,
and have handed you a “just because,”
is it enough, or do you stop and take pause?

Sometimes we cannot go back
and take away a loved one’s pain
when they were loved well once before,
prior to when the wickedness came.

When evil tore a loving world asunder
causing slippage, painful blunder,
When “I love you” was said too late,
can anyone here imagine, even relate?

Then to start a life all over again, at 20
or 30 or 40 or even aged more,
when “I love you” was heard cracking
with the sound of the slamming door.

Cautiously, slowly, we come back to life
perhaps a new husband, or a new wife,
tenderly we open our hearts again,
and love once ripped, starts to mend.

But scars are forever, makeup cannot hide
the painful memories locked deep inside.
So in a new relationship well kept hidden
are the real “I love you’s,” safe till bidden.

So can “I love you” be said too much?
Or is there in it a healing touch?
Can three words take away the pain?
Well, I’m not sure yet, so I’ll say them again.

Sunshine,

What a wonderful poem. : ) "I love you", said by the right person and truly meant, is a healing. : ) I feel very related to this poem and hope you'll find "healing".

Beautiful, indeed, Sunshine. Loved the ending...So long as the love is true, I don't think it can ever be said enough either.

If I love you is spoken dishonestly even once, it is to much. But when spoken honestly and freely, can't be said often enough.
Beautiful poem, Sunshine

I always think it's how the eyes speak, if they can be seen and failing that, the voice gives it all away and only a fool could try to act it...Having said that, what we feel today may not be true of tomorrow..no guarantees unless you work to keep it fresh and exciting but so comfortable it wraps itself around you...ooops...I'm waffling..*g*

Another great poem Sunshine! I don't think they can be said too much if they are sincere! Said one time when not sincere is too many though! Again, great poem!

Pepper - thank you friend, for coming in.

Rainbow - you are right, the eyes can give it away - but you would be amazed at all of the would-be actors{resses} in the world.

Denise - thank you for your compliments, they mean much to me!

Dear Miss Sunshine,......

Those three words you speak of no matter how often or how little......when said in truth are never anything less than LOVE.

This was very sweet and beuatiful.....kind of makes you think about how important those words can really be and the impact that they can have.

Once again Bravo....beautifully done.

It's seems the consensus is
Sincerity - that's the key
And with that additional caveat
I, too, must agree.
Words that have no meaning
Are much better left unsaid
"I love you"s should be spoken
From the heart, not the head.
Not just a social greeting
And not words born of guilt,
But a sharing of the feelings
Trust and respect have built.

Great poem Sunshine! I don't think anyone can be loved too much! It is not just the saying of those words but the doing the behind them that makes it true! For it is like faith, without works it is dead. Love without showing it, don't mean much!
Great thoughts you've expressed, and left us with things to think about!

Suthern, Whtdove, thank you so much. If I can leave anyone thinking, then I have done what is most important to me - sharing.

Sunshine...if you can leave me thinking, you've done a miracle! It hurt really bad, but this did make me think! LOL....now then, this may start something....(that thinking thinggie)....I did some thinking once about a year ago....and have had a headache ever since!......great job here gal....well thought out, and put into words superbly!

Suthern, your reply was wonderful...and I do know what you say comes from your heart!

VL...(Rainbow)....and if your eyes, (as beautiful as they are, and sexy, are speaking to me.....well, 'nuff said!)

Sunshine,
Different people different meanings

Well done loved the poem.
