An Unordinary Day |

It was a windy, crisp October day Not much different from any other The leaves played tag in the parking lot While someone's Nana labored her cart Full of goodies and snacks for the grandkids Prunes for Papa and Crispy Wheat for her To the stale safety of the mini-van Tendrils of her hair flew in steel grey Wisps escaped from the stifled smother Of a too tight bun where they were caught And with creaking grace she jumped with a start Her eyes went wide, losing paper-thin lids The black canvas purse was snatched in a blur The Hitler-youths gone before I could stand I ran then to her, heart full of dismay The expected tears were not there, rather A bittersweet smile and face deep in thought With confusion I asked her to impart What good could she feel for such gruff kids “They wanted it worse than I did, that’s for sure” And softly she sang, with her hand on my hand… “I’ve never made a fortune, and I’ll never make one now, But it really doesn’t matter ‘cause I’m happy anyhow. As I go along my journey, I’m reaping better than I’ve sowed, I’m drinking from the saucer ‘cause my cup has overflowed. We don’t have a lot of riches, and sometimes the going’s tough, But while we’ve got our kids to love us, I think we’re rich enough. I’ll just thank God for the blessings, that His mercy has bestowed, I’m drinking from the saucer ‘cause my cup has overflowed. If He gives me strength and courage, When the way grows steep and rough, I’ll not ask for other blessings, I’m already blessed enough. May I never be too busy to help another’s load, Then I’ll be drinking from the saucer ‘cause my cup has overflowed.” Smiling in thanks, she went about her way Leaving me with my thoughts to gather As the leaves played tag in that parking lot And I walked back to the store with her cart On my drive home, I thought of my kids Their priceless worth, and hearts ever pure And thanked God for a blessing so grand. *Posted with all due respect to the author (unknown to me) of the section within quotes, and gratitude to my Gran for sharing it with me.* [This message has been edited by Satiate (edited 10-22-1999).] |

There is a curious disparity between the title of this piece and the piece itself as the poem is far from unordinary. Well told and done my friend. ------------------ Now and forever, my heart hears ~one voice~. DreamEvil© |

Satiate, this one is truly amazing. I know your Gran doesn't care much for the internet, so you simply must print this one out, or rather, hand copy it, and send it to her. I know this tribute will bring tears to her eyes and a smile to her lips. The simple underlying message serves as a reminder to the simple priceless treasure God has granted. I can't wait until that Spring day when the door opens, you smile and hug your Gran, then say, "Gran, allow me to introduce..." Alicat |

Far from ordinary, interesting format the author chose, I belive perhaps to keep the reader on their toes and to keep their attention. Thanks for the read ![]() |

This is beautiful, Satiate. I am sitting here with tears in my eyes. I hope that I will one day have the sweet simplicity of this 'granny'. She certainly is not old in her spirit! Very very lovely. (Although I am a 'granny', my hair is not yet gray, 'cause I am a very young granny!) This is absolutely precious! Thank you for sharing this! ![]() ------------------ Denise [This message has been edited by dsnyder (edited 10-24-1999).] |
