The Human Heart

Within thy writhing walls
Truths that maim, thought that mauls
Burning cries, biting calls
Do hide;
The shames of thy soul
Hidden in that hole -
Off which swords do roll -
Reside;
Open thy safe to me!
Pandora’s yet may be,
Yet ‘tis wrong not to see
Inside;
There, longing and love;
There nests the white dove
On gates to Above.
Abide!
For ‘tis from this box
That Mankind unlocks
Death’s charm and Life’s pox.
