Whatever happened to the kings of your school's Christmas play?
What happened to the quarterbacks who always saved the day?
What happened to the romeos who stole young hearts away?
Winds picked them up and took them far..
Our boys were blown away to war.

Remember Billy Schneider and his stack of baseball cards?
Or what about Big Joe LaRoc, the leader of the Lords?
They tell me that young Jimmy's gone, who used to mow the yards...
From Viet Nam to Zanzibar
Our boys were blown away to war.

Those schoolboy faces turn to shock as bullets pass their heads,
From innocence to horror as they see the blood they shed.
Instead of fighting just for fun, they fight for life, instead.
Young innocence is scattered far
When boys are blown away to war.

No boys return from battle lines, for into men they've grown
With faces aged a thousand years from what the war has shown.
Cheer the lucky who return and, for the rest, a moan
A purple heart or silver star
In place of boys who went to war.

I just felt it was fitting to put his name down...a tribute in a way...besides, I could write more through my tears.....

I remember that feeling of invincability.
Dodging imaginary bullets shot from plasctic guns. How close your words held to the truth, with ryhme and imagery that tells a story. It's the kind of poetry I enjoy reading. -Jack

I worked on a special work-study program starting when I was just 14... a kinda young age to have your heart broken time and time again... for Fort Polk was the door to Vietnam and I lost friends as quickly as I made them.

This is such a special tribute to them... and to others like them. I thank you, Deer One.

This was a very striking read.  Many people dont know what life is until it is in danger.  The kids that went, wont come back.  If they do come back, they will be changed men forever, possibly living the nightmares of war for the rest of their lives.  My grandpa lost one of his brothers in Korea, killed in the field.  I joined the national guard and feel safe to know that im not going to war anytime soon.  VEry good thoughts, i enjoyed very much.
