On this night of bitter cold, I walk, chilled to the bone through a once familiar town, silent, and alone. My footsteps echo on empty streets as I hurry along my way. One quick look around has said, "There's no reason for you to stay." It's hard to believe this place was once a haven for joy and mirth, for sadly now it seems like the most solomn place on earth. Laughter no longer fills the air for merry ears to hear. Instead of glee there is blighted hope, and discontent instead of cheer. The only thing filling empty rooms in houses along the street is bitter sorrow leftover and resounding cries of those who weep. Mourning the loss of the place they knew to the evil that pervaded, the thing that brought an end to them all, the monster they created. It's damage could not have been forshadowed, for it started very small. "Don't worry!" the people convinced themselves "No need for concern at all!" Nevertheless, behind their backs, the evil commenced to grow, and it started to take over them all, though at first no one seemed to know. It crept into people hearts and minds, their bodies and their souls. Some people fought it, long and hard, while other handed over control. Once inside the human spirit, the evil began to breed, planting it's seeds of predjudice, jealousy, hatred, and greed. For some it tore apart best friends, or took love from husband and wife, for others it shattered hopes and dreams, and all meaning of life. It turned each man against his neighbor, and set each heart in stone. It ripped away all happiness, all the joy they had once known. Finally it got so bad that the people were forced to see what they had made, what it had done, and how they destroyed what used to be. But alas, now it was too late to stop what had begun. Nothing could melt their hearts of ice, nor erase what evil had done. These thoughts lay heavily on my mind, and I walk with a little more haste, wanting to get out as fast as I can and leave this disturbing place. But before I go, I utter one quick prayer that this evil will befall me, my friends, or my family, or anyone else at all. So with a heavy heart I leave letting the town fall out of sight. And I begin once more to walk on through this dark cold night. |

Fascinating imagery! I loved the way this poem conveys the desolation of the spirit. A truly enjoyable piece of darkness. ------------------ Patience is a virtue, but virtue has never been one of my redeeming qualities. |

I wanted to read this poem quickly. There was a hint of danger lurking here and thought if I hurried to the end, I'd be safe. You did a great job of setting a tone with your poem. Welcome to the family! I look forward to reading more from you. |

wow wow wow, this is so good I had to read it three times! It almost reminded me of Stephen King's The Stand of something lurking in the green corn, unseen, waiting. And the opening from the book The Eye of the World where three young boys left the Two Rivers due to invading forces of evil (I won't tell you about it, you have to read it!). And the village burning. But not willing to admit it, not those stubborn Two Rivers folk. Now please hand me something to drive all the evil out and I'll be glad to do it. j/k |

It sounds like the very reason I left my little hometown and why I'm glad to be out now.... Great imagery! ~m~ |
