They gathered their last good night Huddled around a glowing fire light Friends before the marrow's fight To boast of tales, forged and faithful Of kingly banners brave and bold Girls far to young, women never old Dreams left behind for promised gold The evening's mood was cheerful Yet, with the coming of the dawn The laughter and good cheer gone Armor shinning and swords drawn The warriors have their eye full Across the field the enemy came The king states his sovereign claim Froces maneuvered as in game The clashing arms sound dreadful Thrust and parry the slaughter's call Blood and death testament to it all With some victorious, others fall Chaos all about, nothing meaningful The battle raged till with a fatal stroke Their enemies king dead, army broke The field of crimson bodies spoke Celebrate a victory for the Royal! But pyres burn on through the night Fuel collected from the day's strife Friends gather and offer last rights For the passing of this day be mournful |

Fewer things are more striking than medieval poetry done well. I envisioned the entire scene. Well done. |

i finally found it! although a medieval poem, the emotions involved in warfare never change, only the weaponry, and the maidens always left behind, to suffer silently |
