Grandson's Lament |

When I look back in retrospect Was just child's folly I suspect But is to me a sad lament The summer of my discontent. On fifth of June, I turned fourteen And of the world, I had not seen My simple plan, to have some fun Now that my summer had begun. In summers past, I'd always went To Grandma Janes, where I'd been sent. To little house upon the hill With potted plants on window sill. Why must I go? I'm much too old. But yet I went, for I'd been told. To little house upon the hill With potted plants on window sill. My days were spent locked in my room Self pity reigned amidst the gloom Was left alone by Grandma Jane Til summer's end, I did remain. As left her house, I did not wave Ignored the kiss, that I'd been gave My only thought, to leave that place I missed the tear on Grandma's face. To Grandma Jane's I ne'er returned To little house where love I spurned For God he came on autumn's day Took Grandma Jane, she passed away. On tenth of June, she turned fourteen My daughter Jane, she did complain I'm much too old my time to spend With Grandma Sue, she's not my friend. I thought of house upon the hill With potted plants in window sill I felt upon my cheek I fear Memories of a grandma's tear. My grandparents aren't doing very well healthwise, it made me think of how much I love them. It was very sad. |

I am a grandma! Have two granddaughters. Wish I could spend more time with them they are 6 and 7. Your poem was wonderful. Brought a tear to my eye! ------------------ Sharon Lee Rotondi (Enotneicna) [This message has been edited by Enotneicna (edited 06-27-99).] |

Tim, it just doesn't get any better than this. Wonderful craftsmanship, wonderful message. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go phone my grandmother... |

My grandparents are gone, and as yet I have not achieved that title. But this is a lovely tribute, should be printed on a card for Grandparents Day! |

Very, very wonderful sentiment, Tim - and don't we all have that attitude as teenagers - especially at fourteen... My grandmother was quite a poet, too. She had no formal education, and just wrote (quite nostalgically) from her heart. This was one of her laments: The Little White House ...by Velma M. Carlson (1903-1996) The little white house at the ...end of the road Is as lonesome is it can be. ...There was always love and laughter, But now there's only me. ...We had a long life together Which seems like only a dream. ...The years passed by so quickly ~ And were much too short, it seems. ...Many times we talked of the future When the years would come and go. ...Never thinking the day would Really come ~ ...When one of us would be alone; In the little white house at the ...End of the road. May I stay here as long as I live. ...All there is now are the memories I have, ...And the happiness they give. Thank you Tim. It is far too sorry that we need age for wisdom when we are young. |
