One cool morning in September I was really, if I remember, Doing nothing more than passing time in bed And I felt that it would be a Kind of different idea To go downtown and have my fortune read. It's not that I believed in All the mumbo-jumbo weaved in The ability to read a crystal ball But curiosity implored me And besides, Septembers bored me So I went to have it done once and for all I was led into a cellar By some tiny little feller Announcing Madame Zodiac would appear. I surpressed a tiny giggle As she entered with a wiggle And a waddle in an outfit rather queer. I bit hard down on a knuckle To defeat a little chuckle As she grandly sat and stared into the ball. I tried hard supressing laughter But the words she spoke thereafter Left me weak with the absurdness of it all. I paraded around the room As she spoke her words of doom Trying hard to see the seriousness of it all But her words were so foreboding I felt circuits overloading And I fell in a laughing fit against the wall. I threw a ten-spot down as payment For such hearty entertainment As I bid my host a fare-the-well goodbye And the last thing I remember -- As I steepped into September Was her staring up with sadness in her eye. Only a month or two had passed When I found myself aghast And so perplexed by all I knew not what to do For every word that witch had told me Seemed to follow and enfold me And, one by one, they magically came true! Back with fevered haste I sped to That damp cellar filled with voodoo For I knew I couldn't rest until I knew How that sickly, pallid, wrinkled Dirty, grungy, rancid, crinkled Slimy, hocus-pocus fortune teller knew! "There's no secret here", she told me As I felt raw fear enfold me. "I knew you'ld finally come around at last. My crystal ball of special glass Won't show events that come to pass, All it really does is show the past!" And reality came to me As I felt her words go through me And the sense of it came slowly into mind For, if you want to look ahead, Don't look forward but, instead, All you have to do is look behind! Those mistakes you made back then You are going to make again Even though you think you're smarter than before And, if your past is filled with sinning From the moment of beginning, Then your future is assured forevermore. |

There was a time when I could proudly say.."Yes, I am a poet." I see how much more I have to learn. You are so talented. I've been reading all of your work and I have to say....You're one of the best I've read. You're truly an artist. Thank you for sharing your gift. [This message has been edited by Sally S. Sally, I've read the poem you posted and, rest assured, you ARE a poet! That's the beauty of it. Different styles, different thoughts, different manners of expression.....we're all poets. I truly appreciate your kind words and look forward to our association in the group. |

You first brought to thought "love potion #9" and then you brought insight. Well done. Clever individuals like you give me much to strive towards. |

"But beware the future for it can torture Stripping the blissful innocence of ignorance And vanquish hope in life's uncertain game" Wow! Once again I am humbled and inspired by your talent. As humans, we are indeed cratures of habit and sometimes we are more transparent than we wish to believe. Thanks for sharing. Andrew |
