Medic's Memories Flashing of lights in my head Remembering faces of those in pain Sirens wailing in my ears. Oh I hate to remember. The faces of those who died Are kept locked deep within Dreams, Nightmares be gone. Morning come swift to me. The squealing of tires before I ever arrived on the scene Broken glass and bent metal The hulks lie broken open. Smells of fuel and death To nothing does it compare. Metal saws and sledge hammers Prying people from their cars A man and woman slumped Over the wheel and dash Oh God, say it isn't so-- A child there in the rear. Let go of me and let me work! I can save him, mend him. Let go of me and let me be There is something I can do. Not one, but two wee ones: One underneath the other Partner pulls me from the wreck Drags me back to the unit Let it go, they are gone Nothing else you can do. Work on the driver over there He's drunk and combative. Give me the strength to save him I know that he's the reason That this family ceases to exist But save him I must Sun rising overhead The warmth heats sore muscles Home now to sleep and rest But it won't come easy. New shift upon me As i walk into the station Not so eager to get started Memories of the night before There's a different feeling today As if no tragedy had occurred Quiet for hours on end A time to relax and wait A call to respond , Signal 14 A baby is ready to be born Sirens scream loudly warning People to get out of the way Arrive in the nick of time Baby is being born No time for hospitals Babies don't know to wait. When all seems so bad Then something occurs A miracle, a new life Is born into this world. Mom holds baby on her I busily attend to them. The cries are now of joy Another shift is over. |

I think you've captured the paradox well. Just when you feel there is no reason to go on, you are reminded of the magic life holds. I think this is my favorite writing of yours. |

Well done Startin_fresh. Welcome to Passions. I have close friends that do that same job and my wife is an ER nurse. Been there, done that! Kids are always the worst! Keep an eyes on Hoot_Owl_rn. She is also an ER nurse and ... understands. INclan |
