The first time that we met I wore my favorite dress you wore camouflage and looked an awful mess The second time we met you wore olive green again I wore my favorite dress thank God it still was clean! We joked about it later, olive green became your name you called me azure blue and colors were never the same Whenever you said you loved me I remembered that green you wore a shade so down to earth it made me love you more The dress wore out in time, and camouflage went out of style but our love kept on growing, with each new loving smile The babies now run up to us to chant, tell us Gran how you fell in love with Gramps, was he a handsome man? They never tire of the story, they smile and giggle with glee and then they fall silent when you tell them how you met me Eleven children in our life, twenty three grandbabies came and all the grands would ask to hear the story just the same. The grandbabies now have children, our story is never told it’s hard, you see, to think of love when the grandparents grow so old. ~ ~ ~ I found the poem my grandmother wrote, in a book upon the shelf I read it many times today, to my family and to myself We buried them today you see, they died asleep holding hands Eleven kids, and twenty three of the ones she called her grands Seventy years of marriage, a testament to a love so true in caskets, side by side they lay, olive green and azure blue. I had to read this twice, and I still don't know what to say. In a way, it was funny, but poignantly sad at the same time... And btw, blue's my FAVE color, (no "u" Severn!) though I prefer it a darker shade! ------------------ Everyone has a photographic memory... ...most of us just don't have film! I agree with Christopher, funny, yet in a way, very sad also. All the makings of a great tale. ------------------ *Krista Knutson* "If I could be an angel, I'd make your every wish come true. But I am only human, just a woman lovin' you..." Trisha Yearwood |

And this, I submit is the glue that binds a true family together. The family stories....a shared history.....ROOTS. We have many such things in our family....hunting camps, fishing trips, boat rides, births, deaths, funny things that happen on the road of life....all to be treasured and stored within the family heart. Thank you for sharing a piece of your heart. Fact or fiction, the truth of the matter is plain for all to see. INclan |

A superb poem. Aside from some choppy syllables towards the beginning it read very well. It is an extremely touching poem that I personally find uplifting and beautiful. |

This is just beautiful-is it a true story? It's wonderful! ------------------ *Elizabeth* "Dwelt a maid belov'd and cherish'd by high and low, But with autumn leaf she perish'd, long time ago..." |

Families are important, problem is sometimes their importance isn't realized until they're gone. Great poetry PDV |

Thank you all so much for your kind words. This is not a true story. In my search for things to write about, I bought a book on 'Creating Poetry'. One of the exercises is to create a poem around a color...I couldn't decide between olive green (which I hate) or azure blue (which I love). I wanted to show the significance of color in someone's life. That was the beginning of the thought process..it evolved into this poem. I'm glad you were touched by it, I was also touched by it when I wrote it...thinking about our mobile society and generations of children growing up without hearing those old stories over and over. After all, what is a poem, but a story? |
