Masquerade

I hid behind a mask
Painted smiles
Covered tears
Hidden scars

The image in the mirror
Always reflecting
Someone I didn’t even recognize

There in my costume
I felt safe
Life, my greatest act

You saw beyond the masquerade
Demanded I reveal
The person underneath the mask

I shuddered to think
My life revealed
My faults bared
That you may not like what you see

But when the final velvet curtain fell
When I took my final bow
When the masquerade had ended
And my costume dropped to the floor...
You were still there
Waiting in the wings

Clever play on words hoot, there really are two sets of masks here, the kind you wear over your face, and the kind you wear over you!

This was well written ... good imagery ... I enjoyed the read.

In the sixth stanza ... did you mean "shuddered" rather than "shuttered"?

very well portrayed, Hoot. We all wear those masks sometimes...and we're always afraid when unmasking time comes.

Whether consciously or not, I think at one time everyone puts a mask on...and if we have been hurt too many times, a mask is our only protection.....This is very good!

Very good, hoot!!! And when you find someone who sees beyond the mask and accepts that sight, it's incredible... the greatest applause in the world is the sound of one special pair of hands clapping. *S*

Sometimes the masks we wear face inward. Excellent work, Hoot.

I'm tortoise - does that count for the same? My shell is so thick, You'd need an axe to remove it!! It's a safety zone, when you're feelings are exposed to the harsh environment, just like a sensitve tooth!! Ouch....most of us participate in that masquerade, I'm afraid.....(sigh) Piece well written ! **clapping**

Ah, this really hit home for me. Like many others, I've also taken part in the Masquerade, hiding my feelings. It's hard, thats for sure...exellently written.
