Story of My Dog©1999 by Genea Parker Upon the hearth sits my dog His legs ache from chasing frogs, Through pastures, back again, Up the hills, under the logs. When skies began to darken I did not worry, but then I remembered that old snare Laid on the path near the bend. In hopes of catching a bear I’d carefully placed it there. Now stricken with mortal fear, And smothered by thickened air, I ran with wind like a deer, Profane the sound came to my ear. The riddle was solved at last. The bark of a fox I did hear. An unlucky day had passed For a fox who was not fast. My dog came running to me. Where he’d been I did not ask. Laden with kisses and glee No restraint I showed to he. Home to cook his favorite dish, Shells of hot macaroni. He never liked to eat fish And chicken was not his wish. From sirloin he did refrain. Pasta is his favorite dish. So that’s the story of Shane, My dog, my friend just the same. Faithful, loyal I exclaim My dog, my best friend, it’s Shane. |
