A poem is a mother's love,
The stars above.
Real
As a broken heart which cannot heal.
A poem should reveal thy thought
As passions sought.
A poem should be genuine
As child's infectious grin
Showing thoughts inferred,
Admitting, yet concealing behind written word
To bring triumphant joy and wrenching sorrow,
Hopes for the 'morrow.
A poem should reveal thy thought
As passion sought.
A poem should make you think,
A link
Connecting heart and mind,
To seek and then to find
Escape,
A beacon's light on city's scape.
A poem should be tragic,
Magic.
A poem should be real,
Feel.

In my distant past, I read a poem on what a poem is... this is my daughter Kimberly's and my collaberative effort on what a poem is to us... (she wrote all the good lines)

Something that should be copied and referred to often. In time I hope to share my love of the written word with my own daughters. Thanks for sharing yours.

That is exactly what a poem should be

If the topic ever comes up again in another forum asking 'what is poetry'..I'll refer back to this poem. Lovely job Kimberly and Tim! Now how about a 'poetic profile' of dad by Kimberly?

Your collaborative effort is exceptional!!
