She'd learned through his discipline, That her hopes lay on the ground. And so she lived her live with him, Always looking down. She'd learned through his vitriol, That she'd never be good enough. And so she quelled her aching soul, And looked down instead of up. She'd learned through his angry shouts, That her opinion was always wrong. And so she succumbed to her selfdoubts, And muted her spirit's song. She learned through her life with him, That she had had enough. And so she decided, "Never again" And started looking up. She learned the Past only saw her back, As it pushed her on through life. And though its memories were filled with black, They were the source of her guiding light. She learned the Future lay up ahead, Pulling her through the miles. And though the Past saw only her back, Only the Future could see her smiles. She'd learned that always looking down, Kept the future from her sight. So now that Lady is looking up, And she's going to be all right. |

Well written Long John. I like the progression. The second to last stanza is my favorite. Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece. |

Love is what we find in our hearts and mind we find ourselves true, complete but left alone, our hearts deplete but with you there, we can't despair for when up or down, now and then we need our ourselves to be seen by friends! Very well crafted, Long John. We all have our ups and downs but you excel in oneupmanship. |

Andrew Yanno, a lot can be said about a man who can cheer a woman's victory over an oppressive man. And I can think of not one thing bad. Thanks for your comment, it means a lot to me. Hootessa I've known you only a short time, but it seems to me that you've always been looking up when I've read your posts. I thought of you when I posted this poem here. I pray the future will continue to see your smiles. elvira? You?? Controlled?? By a man??? No way! I pity the fool who gets crosswise of you and thinks he'll control that spirit of yours. Rainbows.... you are such a breath of freedom and fresh air. Thank you, kind lady. This past 18 months has been better because I knew you. deVine - Thank you - there is something very uplifting about seeing somebody step out on their own and be free again. My Mom married an extremely abusive set of husbands... she is free of them now, and she's a real red-headed ball of fire. I think I relate to her the most whenever I write a poem like this. 'Deer I would never try to one-up you, because writing with you is so much better than writing apart from you. Your stories and themes inspire me to reach inside myself and curse the darkness with your flame. Thanks for the encouragement. |

Delores Thank you. yanno, there are more ways than one to look up. I see in your writing that you don't always look down, that you have hope in you, and that you expect more of yourself than you are willing to accept. Isn't that the best kind of looking up? |

LngJhnAg...This could have been written for me. It is exactly the way it was, and is for me now. Thank you for this. It just helps me to keep smiling, and smiling and smiling!!! |

Great Poem my friend...at first, I thought it was written about one of them new WNBA women's basketball players.....and I thought: Ole LongJohn sure finds such obscure things to write about...then, when I discovered it was about something really thought provoking, and had a real meaning....I figured Lorelei musta written it....then, after I pondered over it for a long time....I figured even you can do pretty good when ya put your mind to it....LOL....Seriously pal...well done! |
